How this is measured

Three steps, the same for every company on the page. The long version, including what these numbers cannot tell you, is on how it’s measured and as data at methodology.json.

01

Collect real job titles

We pull each company's public workforce signals: department tallies and the actual job titles behind them. No survey, no self-reporting, no login.

02

Classify every title one by one

Each title is classified into the ten-function SG&A map. This is where about a third of department labels move: procurement buyers filed under Finance, whole Sourcing and Facilities teams hiding inside Operations.

03

Count only what we can see

Levels are the classified people we actually observed, capped at each company's profile-visible workforce. That makes them a floor, never an inflated model, which is why the share of SG&A leads and the per-1,000 figure follows.

Questions & answers

FAQs

What is the average facilities headcount benchmark?

Across 5 industries and 48 named companies, facilities and real estate is 0.3% to 5.7% of core SG&A headcount, median 1.9%. Observed facilities and real estate staff run 0.9 to 20.8 per 1,000 employees, median 7.0, a floor from public profiles rather than a full count. Job titles classified one by one; as of August 2026. The like-for-like read is the share of SG&A; the per-1,000 figure understates true staffing because public-profile coverage varies by company.

How does the facilities headcount benchmark differ by industry?

Apparel & footwear: median 3.7% of SG&A, 7.3 per 1,000 employees; Building products: median 2.6% of SG&A, 5.8 per 1,000 employees; Toy & game: median 1.9% of SG&A, 10.0 per 1,000 employees; Tool & industrial: median 1.8% of SG&A, 7.5 per 1,000 employees; Food & CPG: median 1.8% of SG&A, 5.7 per 1,000 employees.

How are these numbers measured?

Each company's public professional profiles are classified into ten SG&A functions from the actual job title, one title at a time, then capped at the company's social-profile-visible workforce. Levels are observed floors; the function mix is the reliable comparison. Full method and limits at https://sgabenchmarking.com/methodology.json.
