HNI is counted as one company with Steelcase and Kimball International, both of which it now owns and both of which still hold their own records in the source data. Its revenue is annualised from its two most recent filed quarters, which are the first that include Steelcase; HNI's last filed full year contains only three weeks of it. La-Z-Boy runs about 200 company-owned Furniture Galleries and Ethan Allen about 170 design centers, so part of what reads as Sales at those two is retail store staff rather than a commercial function. It is the single largest reason Sales runs wider here than on the other industry pages. Department labels are checked by reading the actual job titles and re-sorting them. Two examples of why: the source data files 103 people at Bassett and 94 at HNI under 'Medical & Health', and reading the titles leaves 4% and 2% of them there. Virco (140 classified roles) and Flexsteel (184) rest on the smallest samples in the cohort; treat their function-by-function splits as the least reliable rows here.

We pull each company’s public workforce signals: department tallies and 21,560 actual job titles across Finance, Operations and the C-suite, the same way for all nine companies.

Classify every title

Each title is classified into the ten-function SG&A map. This is where 44% of department labels move: procurement buyers filed under “Finance,” whole Sourcing and Facilities teams hiding inside “Operations.”

Count only what we can see

Levels are the classified contacts we actually observed, with no modeled multipliers. That makes them a conservative floor, works identically for public and private companies, and keeps every number traceable to real titles. The census closes the gap to a verified total.

This page counts what the titles say, not what the labels say.

How accurate are the estimates?

The function mix comes from classified real titles and is the like-for-like read. Levels are observed floors; public-database coverage varies by company, so they understate real headcount, by a different amount at each company. A full census closes that gap by naming the people, usually within ±5–8% of the real number.
